Perplexity AI Makes Its AI Browser “Comet” Free for Everyone
Perplexity AI has announced that its AI-powered browser, Comet, is now available for free to all users. The move marks a major shift in the company’s strategy to make advanced AI browsing accessible to a broader audience.
The company also introduced a new subscription plan called Comet Plus, which was first unveiled in August. The plan will cost $5 per month for free users, while existing Pro and Max subscribers will get access at no extra charge.
Comet Plus is being positioned as an alternative to Apple News, offering a personalized and AI-driven reading experience. Perplexity has partnered with some of the world’s top publishers — including CNN, Condé Nast, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Fortune, Le Monde, and Le Figaro — to bring premium news content to its users.
Alongside the pricing update, Perplexity also revealed a powerful new feature called Background Assistant. This tool allows Comet to access multiple apps and complete tasks even while the user is away — from sending emails to summarizing documents.
Comet was originally launched in July 2025 as an exclusive product priced at $200 per month for Perplexity Max subscribers. However, due to massive interest — with a waitlist of 460,000 users that quickly grew into the millions — the company decided to open it up to everyone.
CEO Aravind Srinivas shared that the goal is to make “AI browsing a seamless part of everyday life.”
Perplexity’s move comes amid intensifying competition in the AI browser space. Just this week, Opera introduced Neon, an AI-powered browser capable of running code and performing complex tasks. Meanwhile, OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch its own browser in the coming months.
With these developments, the AI browser landscape is heating up — and Perplexity’s decision to make Comet free could set a new benchmark for accessibility and innovation in the field.
